What You Need Permission For
Populism Africa Review publishes original commentary, research-led essays, episode scripts, show notes, and audio content on politics across Africa. If you want to reuse any part of that material, please request permission before you publish, broadcast, or circulate it further.
Permission is usually needed for republication of text excerpts beyond fair quotation, use of original audio clips, translation for public release, redistribution in newsletters or course packs, and reproduction of our show notes or episode summaries in another publication.
- Short quotations with clear attribution may be allowed in limited cases
- Full essays, extended excerpts, or adapted versions need written approval
- Audio clips, even brief ones, need separate permission if they will be reused publicly
- Private academic use is handled differently from public publication
How To Submit a Permission Request
Write to Populism Africa through the contact page form and include as much detail as possible. Name the piece, the use and the territory so we can review the request. We may ask follow-up questions if the intended use is not clear, so please keep the request specific.
- Your full name and organisation, if applicable
- The exact title, episode, passage, or audio segment you want to use
- The format you want to publish in, such as a website, podcast, print feature, classroom pack, or report
- The territory and language of use, especially if you plan to distribute across more than one country
- Whether the use will be free, paid, commercial, or for internal circulation only
- The proposed publication date and any deadline you are working toward
If you are based in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Soweto, Nairobi, Lagos, Accra, Lusaka, or elsewhere in Gauteng, the process is the same. We handle all requests centrally from Rosebank, Johannesburg.
What We Check Before We Approve Use
We review each request on its own merits. Our focus is on protecting authorship, making sure the material is not taken out of context, and confirming that the use does not misrepresent our editorial position. We also check whether the requested use is compatible with the original format and audience.
For example, an excerpt used in a policy briefing may need different wording or a shorter length than an excerpt used in a university reading list. Audio clips may need trimming for length, and we may require a note showing where the original appeared.
- Length of the excerpt or clip
- Context in which it will appear
- Whether attribution is clear and visible
- Whether the use changes the meaning of the original material
- Whether the request involves commercial redistribution
Attribution and Credit Requirements
When permission is granted, proper credit must appear wherever the material is used. Credit should identify Populism Africa Review and name the relevant author or producer where applicable. If the material has been edited for length or adapted for a new format, make that clear in the published version or recording.
We may also ask that a link or reference to the original source be included. Where audio is used, spoken attribution or on-screen credit may be required. Please do not remove bylines, production notes, or source references from our material without approval.
- Keep the title accurate
- Keep the author or producer credit intact
- Do not imply endorsement unless we have agreed to that in writing
- Use the material only in the approved format and territory
If a republication is translated, summarised, or excerpted, the credit line should still point back to the original source.
Turnaround Times, Fees, and Special Cases
Simple requests can often be handled quickly, but we recommend allowing enough time for review, especially if your deadline is tied to print production or a programme schedule. Complex requests, multi-platform use, or requests involving several episodes may take longer.
Some uses may attract a fee, depending on the scope, reach, and commercial value of the proposed publication. If a fee applies, we will explain the basis for it before you proceed. If your request is for teaching, research, or another non-commercial purpose, say so clearly in your submission.
- Plan ahead if you need material for a launch, seminar, or broadcast slot
- State whether the use is one-off or recurring
- Tell us if the material will be reused in multiple editions or channels
- Request separate approval for each new use if the original approval does not cover it
When Permission Is Not Granted
We may decline a request if the proposed use is too broad, misleading, or likely to place our work in a context that changes its meaning. We may also refuse permission where the source material is incomplete, the attribution is unclear, or the request involves redistribution that goes beyond what we are able to approve.
If permission is not granted, that does not prevent you from writing your own original commentary or from quoting within lawful limits where appropriate. It simply means our material may not be reused in the way requested. If you are unsure, send a fresh enquiry with a narrower proposal and we will review it again.
For any approval, keep a copy of the written response with your publication records. That makes later checks much easier, especially when material is republished more than once or across different platforms.
